What To Do On A Rainy Day

With over 300 days of sun a year, Mallorca does not have many rainy days. But, when it rains, it pours. Certain months of the year are more prone to rain – namely, September and March/April. The last few years, we have gotten more freak storms that devastate communities like the one in 2018 when the entire island came out to support families who had lost everything. For those rainy days when you need to entertain the children, and yourself, here’s a list of affordable and fun ideas.

Indoor Markets #

Mercat de l’Olivar is the largest indoor market in Palma. This is the Supermarket of your dreams. You will find all types of fresh produce, pastries and dried fruits. They have stalls with accessories for your kitchen and fashion finds for you, too. You’ll be able to sit and have tapas, an aperitif and more.

If you are in Palma, the Museu Fundación Juan March Palma is a must see. Located in an historic mansion off the Plaza Major, this is a free and fun visit to see a stunning permanent collection of over 70 Spanish works of art including works by Dalí, Picasso and Miró. The Collection includes innovative examples of 20^thCentury works, a temporary exhibit space and events to enlighten, inspire and entertain. If you are looking for special gifts, the Museum Shop offers many unique treasures that will please the most discerning connoisseur.

Museu Fundacion Juan March. In English and Spanish, the website offers sustenance for the most intellectual among us of all ages. Make sure to check out the latest exhibits and have this on your travel list for visiting friends and family.

Not to be outdone, make sure to include another iconic musuem on your travels, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Mallorca or Miró Mallorca. The Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca is a cultural centre based on the art studios that artist Joan Miró bequeathed to the public. It offers visitors an insight into his artwork and underlying creative process in the place where the artist lived and worked for almost 30 years.

The Fundació aims to offer an interdisciplinary public service with a view to promoting knowledge, social links and participation, both at a local and international level. It is a centre for contemporary artistic creation and for reflection on subjects associated with Joan Miró’s work.[1]

Location Visit Miro Mallorca . Easiest is to have a car or take the bus. Parking is super easy. This place is handicap accessible.

Opening Hours and Fees. Link for times and fees. You can arrange guided tours, events and so much more. This is a must-see when visiting or living on Mallorca. They have studio space for artists so you’ll get glimpses of early works by up-and-coming talent. The café is currently closed until further notice.

Near Alcudia, here’s one of our favorites: Museo Sa Bassa Blanca. Fully immersed in the natural setting of the northern coast, this museum is a collaboration between Yannick Vu and Ben Jakober with philanthropist George Coulon Karlweis. Beginning in 1993, the property has been lovingly restored and enhanced to be declared a fully-protected biologic preserve, the property has interior spaces and outside gardens that provide a glimpse at the wealth and diverse of the island. Truly, this is a must-see.

Location. Sa Bassa Blanca, Camí del Coll Baix s/n Alcudia. This is worth the effect to find this magical place.

• Wednesday to Saturday : 10am to 6pm The galleries close from 1pm to 2pm, but the Sculpture park and the Rose Garden are open. The galleries and the ticket office close at 5:30 pm .
• Sunday : 10am to 3pm The galleries and the ticket office close at 2:30 pm .
• Monday, Tuesday : closed

Final Thoughts #

While we all love the sun, sand and sangria, these rainy days are treasures. My husband used to wake up and say, “Another day in Paradise.” After a while, he came to treasure water for the garden and golf course, fresh splash in the sea and a cleaning of the air. He’s definitely a sun worshipper and enjoys his sailing but he’s since found this list and more keeps him quite occupied. The island is full of treasures both inside and out.
