You might be surprised to discover that several cinemas in the city of Palma regularly show films in their original language with subtitles in Spanish.

One of the most popular of these cinemas is Cineciutat which is a small independent multi-screen cinema, which only shows films in their original version (with Spanish subtitles) and is housed in S’Escorxador, a group of historic buildings just north of the city centre at Carrer de L’Emperadriu Eugenia 6. If coming in from the Ma-20 ring road, take the Valldemossa exit towards the city centre, and there is an underground car park at the location as well as some on street parking.

S’Escorxador was designed in the Modernist style by Mallorcan architect Gaspar Bennazar who was awarded a prize in the Spanish National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1906 for it. Originally, it was used as a slaughterhouse.

Those days are now well and truly in the past, and S’Escorxador has become a commercial complex and cultural centre incorporating many restaurants and bars, a supermarket, medical centre, municipal offices, Cineciutat, and a gastro market by the name of Mercado Gastronómico San Juan.

On a recent visit, Cineciutat was showing a total of 8 films - 4 in English, 2 in Spanish, and one each in French and Italian. Ticket price is €7.50 but with a reduced price of €5 on Mondays and €3.90 on Wednesdays, unless these days are public holidays or the evening before a public holiday.

You can check out the listings on the cinema’s website www.cineciutat.org which has an English option, and they are also published in the Mallorcan daily newspapers. It is worth mentioning that they also screen the British National Theatre Live productions for which the ticket price is €13.

An excellent way to round off your evening after seeing your film would be with a visit to the Mercado Gastronómico San Juan which is immediately opposite the cinema. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday from 12.30 pm to midnight. Closed on Monday. Contact tel. +34 971781004.

Have a browse around the market stalls where you will find many types of cuisine on offer from Italian pasta or Thai food to Basque pinxos, sushi, or oysters, as well as Mallorcan specialities - all at very reasonable prices. There is a great selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and also coffee, tea and delicious cakes! You can eat inside at the tables running down the centre of the market hall, or there are outside terraces for dining on those warm summer nights.

The food is beautifully presented, the atmosphere is friendly and congenial - it is well worth a visit!
