A fun place to visit and discover hidden treasures. We want to move here. ~ Robert, U.K.

Where #

Located a little under an hour from Palma’s airport between Manacor and Artá this picturesque, this historical 16th century village takes you on a journey to one of the regions with the most lush and elaborate history on the Island. The town was and is still largely dominated by the agricultural sector with the familiar views of Mallorca’s beautiful agrarian fields full of figs, olive and citrus trees. The locally grown produce being sold at the village markets grows abundantly here.

History #

Sant LLorenç's rich history dates back to the Bronze Age. You can still see some of the remains of this original settlement on the outskirts of the village. The town was only recognized by a royal decree in the year 1816.

The construction of a town hall was proposed shortly thereafter. However, with the Absolutism Movement’s rise in Spain, the project was rejected. So, it wasn’t until 1892, that the first town hall was officially established.

Local Sights #

Sant Llorenç is a village resplendent with deep historical roots and the local sights are a testament to just that. It boasts of a beautiful Baroque-style architecture that dates back to the 14th century. One of its most iconic buildings is its church, positioned on the town’s main square, Plaça Nova.

Not only does Sant Llorenç have lovely old-fashioned buildings but also, as you take a stroll through the village, you can spot multiple traditional Balearic windmills which are still maintained by the local governmental public works department.

Sant Llorenc 2

On the fringes of Sant Llorenç, you find the Yacimiento de S’Illot - the remains of a Talaiotic settlement. The Talaiotic culture and settlements were established shortly before the collapse of the Bronze Age and remained intact while the world slowly transitioned into the Iron Age. This archaeological discovery has been recognized as a World Heritage site and an extra bonus is - you can visit it completely for free!

Talaiot Village

AM Tips: Nearby is an area in the region called Punt de n’Amer. The castle tower, known colloquially by the locals as Es Castellet, served as a stronghold of defence to protect the inhabitants of the island against eastern invaders and pirates in the late 17th century. It has since been restored and is open to the public, also for free.

During the summer months (July and August), it is open from 10:00 to 00:00, while the rest of the year it is only open from 10:00 to 18:00.

Es Patí – for a special occasion

The restaurant “Es Patí” has been deemed one of the towns’ most innovative and game-changing culinary spots. The concept of the restaurant is unique as they do not have a set menu, but rather a 5-course meal prepared with fresh products purchased that morning.

The chef, Felix, goes out and gets inspired by different ingredients and prepares a new menu every day, surprising his patrons with Mediterranean fusion meals which are served both inside, and outside on a beautiful little patio (hence the name). The 5-course meal is delectable and for its standards, it is affordable at the same time, setting you back only 49€.

Shopping and Market #

The town has all the shopping amenities you may need during your visit such as grocery stores, pharmacies and even souvenir shops, but the crown jewel of the town is its market.

Every Thursday from 09:00-13:00 you’ll find the market generally full of stalls with fresh and locally sourced products by local farmers and agrarians. While the market is small, it does offer an incredible variety of locally made wine, honey, fruits, jams and more due to the high quality of water available to the area.

Art & Culture #

Sant Llorenç has so much happening for residents of the district. The area has retained its fascinating artistic and cultural background . Learn more by following the Ajuntament (Town Hall) on Facebook or contact them here >> Ajuntament de Sant Llorenc

The artist Miquel Pont (1678-1755) was born in this town. Even though he’s a Mallorquín native, he ventured to Rome to continue his craft. In 1717, he returned to Palma and some of his works are still present in the “Capilla del Santo Cristo” a church in Manacor

An important narrator and scholar, Salvador Galmés (1876-1951), was also born in Sant Llorenç.

Charm factor #

Sant LLorenç des Cardassar is a great example of how Mallorca blends modern urban facilities, while still maintaining the abundant appeal that comes with visiting archaic towns due to its impressive Baroque architecture. Whether you are on a short-term visit to Mallorca or have come to live here – don't miss out on this gem.
