Pit Stop! #
Sometimes we fancy a quick get-away and Mallorca is a perfect destination for soaking up some sunshine, experiencing some culture, sampling some food and managing to do it all in a short space of time! However, knowing where to go and what to do is crucial. Have no fear, Affordable Mallorca is here to guide you through 36 hours on the rock, and the ultimate hotspots to visit, in just a few hours!
Palma Cathedral #
Now, it goes without saying that Palma Cathedral is one of the most beautiful and iconic landmarks on our island and no trip to Mallorca would be complete without witnessing this stunning sight for yourselves. Entry is 8€ per person and entitles you to walk through the entirety of the cathedral and it’s grounds, and at certain times of the year you are able to visit the roof terraces, which offer panoramic views across the city. It’s simply breathtaking!
Inside the cathedral, on a sunny day, the stained glass windows cascade shadows that replicate rose petals across the tiles, and the sheer feat of architecture is guaranteed to dazzle you! With regard to logistics, hopefully Palma is you hotel base, so you can fit in the Cathedral visit in the morning and take the suggested drives below a bit later on in the day....
Es Trenc #
Now, for all you beach bums out there, where better to soak up the sun than Mallorca’s Number One beach- Es Trenc. White sands and crystal waters, so clear that you can see your own reflection, are sure to appeal to all - usually. During certain years this natural beach can also have foot deep seaweed at the shore line, making the water murky and the beach uncomfortable. It is important to get a status on the seaweed situation before making the trip east. While the seaweed makes for an ugly beach temporarily, it helps sand build up which is an ecological necessity. This beach is 30 minutes from the Palma Airport.
A picture perfect hillside town, nestled within the Tramuntana mountain range, Valldemossa is steeped in history- most famous for being the residence of composer Chopin and his French lover George Sand. A trip to Chopin’s place of abode at the Carthusian monastery is a must when visiting Valldemossa, not only for its beauty, but also for an insight into how life was for one of Mallorca’s first famous foreigners. The town offers many quaint streets and local shops, and no trip is complete without sampling a healthy slice of almond cake! "Tarta Almendra" or "Gató" in Catalan, is a local baked delight, made with toasted almonds, harvested from the Tramuntana mountain range- Valldemossa serves up some of the island’s best.
With only 36 hours on the island, one tends not to travel too far and centre one's break around Palma. Ordinarily, I would agree, but if there is one journey worth taking, it’s hiring a car and taking the hour long journey to Puerto Pollensa to visit the famous Lighthouse of Formentor. The scenery across the Northern coast of Mallorca is exquisite, and for those who are up to the challenge, why not take the mountain road from Sóller all the way through to Pollensa, for some of the most incredible views you will ever witness.
Upon arrival to Puerto Pollensa, the seaside resort oozes sophistication and class, and as you embark on the winding road to the lighthouse itself, Mallorca’s natural beauty speaks for itself. There are several stop points en route to capture photos, or even grab an ice cream. The drive to the summit is certainly a tad hair-raising, but the reward is undeniably fabulous. Before embarking on your journey back to wherever you may be staying why not sample some of the local cuisine at locals' favorite Celler La Parra - you won’t be disappointed!
