Nit de l’Art in Palma

There are two distinct languages. There is the verbal, which separates people...and there is the visual that is understood by everybody. - Yaacov Agam

What is La Nit de l'Art? #

Founded in 1996 by Pep Pinya and Xavier Fiol through AIGAB (Independent Association of Art Galleries of the Balearics), this is the premier event to kick-off the gallery season. Palma is the first city in Europe to celebrate La Nit de l'Art. Every year, you'll find galleries and museums around the island from Andratx to Pollença that have gatherings to commemorate this event. As with all things COVID, just remember that seating indoors is limited so be sure to plan ahead if you want to attend a talk or see a particular show.

On September 22nd 2018, for the 22nd time, Palma will again start into the art season with gallery openings, shows, street performances and many creative happenings. In this most anticipated of cultural events in town, about 20 museums, ateliers and showrooms all open their doors from 7p.m. till midnight, offering firsthand glimpses into the City's vibrant contemporary art scene. The good news is: It's all free!

Although many serious art connoisseurs from all over Europe are drawn to the exhibitions, you don't have to be a fan or collector to join the festive mood. Thousands of visitors mill through the narrow streets of Palma's old town, enjoying this mix of art spectacle and traditional Mallorquin fiesta with surprise installations, spontaneous performances and the works of hundreds of artists on show.

News in the Art World #

Several galleries in Palma are beginning to talk BTC, NFTs, other forms of crypto currency as payment for paintings in solid form or digital production rights. Lots of scammers exist out there. So please, be good to the artists who are making a living from their creativity. While we appreciate glazing at inspiring and creative works, we need to remember that artists have bills to rent to pay and need food to eat.

Very few artists are so successful they are able to find patrons who will sponsor them. True artists must create and this is their gift to us all who appreciate visual art.

The latest rage on the scene is to create NFTs for art. Click that link to read more. If you have BTC and want to spread the wealth, inquire with the gallery if the artist is willing to take crypto as a form of currency. NFTs work well for cross borderBy residents, yachtees and others who move around a lot.

For collectors and serious fans: Previews are on the September 21st.

So, don't miss out on this!

AM Tip # 1: As the evening progresses, some of the visitors might get high not on the fascinating art, but on too much alcohol. So, our recommendation is to come early.

AM Tip # 2: If you prefer taking in the art in a quieter atmosphere, use the Nit de l'Art to get a general impression and come back on another day to specifically see what caught your eye. For the art newbies: Don't be shy to enter a Gallery! People love to show you around.
