How to Claim Unemployment Benefits in Spain

24 noviembre 2020

Depending on your work contract, and how long you’ve been resident in Spain and paying into the tax system you may be entitled to claim unemployment benefits, called paro in Spanish.

Who Is Entitled? #

To be entitled to apply for unemployment benefits in Spain, you must be a resident and have a social security number, which is essentially a tax code that ensures you pay into the local tax system. And whether employed or self-employed (autónomo), you should have been issued with one before starting work. You must also have had your social security number for a minimum of one year. Anybody who has held their number for a lesser time will not have contributed enough into the system to claim their paro allowance. If you have lost your job involuntarily, or your employer has chosen to not, ‘renew your contract’ then paro can also be claimed.

How to Claim #

Before you can claim, an initial appointment must be made over the phone (Tel: 971 980 779 for the Balearic Islands – in Catalán or Spanish only, so if you don't speak the language ask a friend who does to help!) where you must disclose your NIE number. They will then issue an appointment date at the nearest SEPE office (Servicio Publico de Empleo Estatal). Please, note you must start your claim within 15 days of your contract/employment ending. There are rather a lot of documents needed to make the claim, so ensure you don’t miss anything off the list!

Documents to Take #

  • Certificado de empresa – given to you at the end of your employment contract
  • The Demanda/Tarjeta del paro – Received at your first appointment
  • The completed application form ‘Solicitud de prestación’ and a copy
  • Your NIE original and a copy (or DNI)
  • Your passport (and a copy)
  • Relevant bank account details
  • Libro de familia and a copy or your children's birth certificates (if applicable)
  • The two most recent payslips (nóminas)

How Much They Pay and For How Long #

Providing everything is correct you will be entitled to 70% of your salary for the first six months of saving, however factors such as the number of children you have, or any health conditions/disabilities can influence the amount you are entitled to. After the initial six-month period you will only receive 50% of your monthly salary. Claims can be made for a minimum of 4 months and a maximum of 2 years.

Affordable Mallorca Tip: There is a small fixed unemployment subsidy of 426€ per month for those who, maybe, found themselves out of work before the year was out. However any other special situations should be discussed with SEPE office themselves, as you may find you are entitled to further help.
