"Little Germany" – a beach resort with hidden qualities

Situated along the western side of the island about 25 minutes from the airport, Peguera has garnered itself a reputation of being rather understated when compared to the neighbouring holiday resorts of Santa Ponça, Magaluf read: "The truth about Magaluf" and Palmanova. But don’t let that fool you! This little tourist town with its local population of just under 4,000 still offers a variety of activities and secret beaches that will satisfy its visitors.

Paguera Cala Fornils

Peguera used to be a fishing village (like most others along the Island's shoreline), however, it began to commercially attract tourism in the early 60s, after the municipality decided to move forward with the plan of turning it into a resort for vacationers, taking advantage of its natural seafront.

The resort is visited by predominantly German-speaking people, and the moniker "Little Germany" is well deserved; you can really notice that the town caters to Teutonic tastes, but fear not, as it does not have any of the famed debauchery that the German guests bring to El Arenal. Peguera is more of a family-oriented destination where you can have an adventurous and fun day, and go out for a quiet meal and drink at night without being hassled by dozens of PR people persuading you to go into bars and nightclubs.

Shopping

During the summer months, Peguera turns into a lively spot as tourists start teeming around the famed boulevard, a road of about 1.5 km in length with hundreds of local boutiques, restaurants, hotels and businesses that would fulfil any holidaymakers’ needs (and all at a fairly affordable price range!).

Peguera also hosts a local market every Tuesday along the western side of the boulevard. Many locals set up stalls offering fruit and vegetables grown in the area plus clothes manufactured by local artisans.

Cruise Tours

Peguera does not fall short of spectacular when it comes to sporty and leisurely activities. One of the most popular things to do in Peguera is to take one of the cruise tours that take you out to sea for the day, where you get to appreciate Mallorca’s beauty from a different perspective. These tours are family-friendly, and usually the boats have glass bottoms so you can appreciate the underwater landscape, as well as the one above. If you’re lucky, you may even see a dolphin or two!

Cruceros Cormoran offer boat tours that leave daily at multiple times and organise everything on board for you at affordable prices (approximately 30€ per person)

Beaches #

Peguera has a promenade that extends to not only one, but three different beaches. The Playa de la Romana, the smallest one of the three, is also the most family-friendly of them all, as it has a small public soccer field, a basketball court and a playground for your children to entertain themselves while you lie comfortably in the sand or go for a serene swim.

Paguera Playa De La Tora 1

The Playa de la Tora is the most central one of the three, having a length of approximately half a kilometre. In winter, this beach is known as one of the best beginner surf spots on the south west of the island, with meter long waves on some days.

Paguera Playa De La Tora 2

Finally, the Playa Palmira, the biggest of the three, is the one that gets the most crowded, due to the proximity of all the hotels that have direct access to the beach in the area. It also has numerous restaurants and cafés that offer a taste of Mediterranean cuisine.

Paguera Playa De La Romana

AM tips: If you want to camp out at the beach all day in Peguera, be sure to do so early, as during the summer season all of the beaches tend to get jam-packed by high noon. Alternatively, you can check out the “Platja d’es Morts” (Beach of the Dead), which is a small beach composed mainly of rocks on the other side of the hill of Playa de la Romana. It is usually unoccupied and is a great snorkelling spot. The neighbouring cove of Cala Fornells is also a little hidden gem that doubles as a snorkelling spot with colourful reefs and diverse marine life.

Food & Drink #

If you want great Mediterranean food with an incredible view out at sea, be sure to check out the restaurant La Gran Tortuga in the area of Cala Fornells, which offers amazing Mediterranean dishes at a reasonable price range.

AM Hidden Gem: LUNA 81 Lounge Bar is a great little spot above the Playa de la Romana, with magnificent views of the whole town, but what really makes this place stand out is the ability to enjoy a beautiful Mediterranean sunset free of any clutter. With moderately priced cocktails, this place is a must for a tiny aperitif before heading out to dinner.

Living in Peguera #

AM Founder, Memphis Holland, suggests:
A quick look at any real estate listing site will give you a range of housing choices: nice apartments with pools and no view priced at €187,000 to €400,000 for a 65m2 place with a sea view. Villas from €500,000 to €1.5MM. The sea views make the slight bump in price nice since this beach is one of the best maintained on the southwest coast. Our suggestion is to walk the streets to see where you would like to be then do an online search before visiting agents. Pocket listings are available, generally upon request, as not all of them are listed.

Paguera Cala Fornils 1

AM Tip: Look at several real estate online sites and do a general Google search “Properties for sale in Paguera, Mallorca.” Know that most Germans do not sell easily but when they make a decision, time is of the essence. Have your wallet ready when you make an offer. Most realtors will have “pocket” properties which may appeal to you more than the ones listed on the internet.

Charm factor #

The beaches of Peguera are some of the best in the Southwest. Well-maintained and clean, you can practice surfing and paddle boarding without inflicting damage to your body if you fall. Great for children, the clean beaches keep the feet safe. On windy days, you’ll see Kite Sailing and Parasailing. Surprise your friends by planning a group gathering around a wedding or hen party. [[Link to Wedding Posts and then have those as affiliated posts at end of article ]]

Peguera is still a beer-loving town. However, the latest upgrades on the streets and infrastructure make this a good investment for real estate.
