City Digs #

Whenever I go to a big city, beach town or resort areas and begin looking for places to stay, I’m forever shocked at how astoundingly high the prices are. The cost and stress of looking for something affordable can really put a damper on the whole trip. One great way to avoid that is by putting aside preconceived notions and looking at local hostels.

The key to keep in mind is that these are BASIC accommodations. Don’t expect the royal treatment. There won’t be any 3,000 thread count sheets, spa toiletries and extensive breakfast options (Take note picky eaters. You know who you are!), but generally you will get a safe place to lay your head and belongings, free WiFi and access to some pretty terrific locations.

Palma: Brick

If you want a dose of city, check out Brick in Palma. Close to sites such as the Cathedral, Plaça Mayor, shopping, restaurants and even the sea, this city centre spot is popular for its clean, comfortable and rather chicly stark, industrial-feeling mixed and female-only dorms and private rooms. There is an on-site bar with a modern, trendy air, completely unlike what is usually thought of as a hostel experience. Reception hours are from 9h-23h and there is no curfew, so guests are free to party on into the night. Breakfast is available, but not included in the price.

Brick, Calle Forn de'n Vila 3, 07002 Palma de Mallorca, +34 871 03 18 94

Rates starting at €32/night

Palma: Port Hostel

A bit more of a traditional hostel, the shared dorm rooms sleep up to 10 in comfortable bunkbeds with personal lockers to keep belongings safe and sound. Communal areas include a kitchen, a terrace with picnic tables and a TV lounge. Rooms have air conditioning when the heat gets to be too much.

The hostel is geared toward the under 30 crowd, so oldsters be prepared to show a HI or REAJ membership card to book in. Dorms come in three flavours: Mixed, male-only and female-only, and the shared bathrooms are gender specific.

Situated on a lovely tree-lined street only 3kms from Plaça Mayor and a quick 2-minute walk to the bus, this option is a great choice for friends travelling in packs or singletons alike.

Palma Port Hostel, Carrer de Son Catlaret, 4, 07014 Palma, +34 628 63 08 47

Cala d'Or: San Francisco Hostal

A highly rated option is the San Francisco Hostal in Cala d’Or. Located in the centre of town near restaurants and nightlife, and within walking distance of three spectacular beaches, this is a great choice for those who love no-frills fun-in-the-sun. Friendly greeting upon arrival, clean towels daily, and fairly varied breakfast options make this a popular place year-round.

Affordable Mallorca Tip: High-season guests should be told that street noise at night from the bars and restaurants can get pretty loud, but if you get a room in the back, the noise will be lessened. Otherwise, just smile, remember you’re on holiday and pack your earplugs if you’re an early to bed sort of person.

San Francisco Hostal, Avenida Tagomago 18-20, 07660 Cala d’Or, +34 971 26 46 50

Walkabout #

Mallorca is a walker’s paradise. With hundreds of kilometres of trails, stumbling onto one is like falling off a bike… but what about lodgings in between points A and B? Turns out, Mallorca has a huge number of excellent, and excellently located, hostels along or near many of the island’s most popular routes.

Sóller: Hostel Sóller

After a long week’s walk along the GR221, what better way to end than to find yourself in beautiful, historic Sóller at the Hostel proudly carrying the town's name. Well located in the centre, the hostel is in a stylish old manor-type house, featuring exposed wooden beams and cool stone walls. Tidy, and oozing charm, both dorm and private rooms are available, with en-suite baths in upgraded rooms. There are also laundry facilities on site. Breakfast can be had for a small additional cost.

The Hostel Soller rates highly with single travellers. Solo walkers and bikers say the security measures are great and include lockers and a bike storage area. Sóller is convenient as a base for other explorations as well with good bus service Furthermore, the gorgeous vintage train that goes to Palma runs a few times daily, with stops in Bunyola along the way!

Deià: Refugi Can Boi

For full-blown rustic charm check out Deia’s Refugi Can Boi. Stone walls line the interior of a lovely old building, featuring and antique olive press! The lodgings are simple bunk bed dorms with shared bathrooms but are clean and well appointed. There is a garden, terrace, restaurant and bar on premises, and the views are marvellous.

As a major stopping point along the Dry Stone Route, reservations are recommended.

Refugi Can Boi, Carrer Es Clot, 5, 07179 Deià, +34 971 63 61 86

Rates starting at €22/night

Esporles: Sa Fita Backpackers

Super cute and laid-back Esporles is home to our next hostel. Sa Fita Backpackers gets high marks all around and is even better rated than some local hotels at twice to three times the price. The hostel has a swimming pool, terrace, garden and a shared kitchen, though some rooms have a small kitchenette as well. Laundry facilities are available, too. Handy, as many travellers who stay here are bikers and hikers who use Esporles as the starting point for their climbs into the Tramuntanas.

The eight-room facility has a warm, family-style feel and features clean, well-maintained shared dorms and bathrooms as well as a few private rooms for those who prefer a bit of quiet.

Sa Fita Backpackers, Carrer Joan Riutort 49, 07190 Esporles / +34 619 42 84 36
