How to Make Sanitary Masks

20 March 2020

“Necessity is the mother of invention.” - English Proverb

“Prior to modern disposable masks, washable fabric masks were standard use for hospitals,” said Dawn Rogers, MSN, RN, FNP-C, Patient Safety & Infection Prevention Office. “We will be able to sterilize these masks and use them repeatedly as needed. While it’s less than ideal, we want to do our best to protect our staff and patients during this pandemic.”

Details about Making Fabric Masks #

Hospitals and urgent care facilities are in need of masks. If you spend any time on social media, you’ve probably seen an appeal by friends of workers at Son Espaces. All the hospitals on the island are in desperate need of hygienic supplies. While you are at home, creatively using your time can help with your sanity and can support the healthcare workers who are on the front lines of this pandemic.

The Center for Disease Control in the U.S.A. has issued these Guidelines for Masks to better understand mask safety and how to manage a shortage of supplies.

Time: 15-20 minutes

Here’s a list of what you need #

  • Elastic ribbon – this is sewn onto the layers to create a tight fit around the nose and mouth. Remember your eyes need additional protection.
  • Inner layer – A hydrophobic fabric like a jersey or similar cotton
  • Filtration layers – Cotton, bamboo, fleece are good. 3-layered fabrics offer better filtration. You can use something in your closet if you are willing to cut it up. You could make several masks.
  • Outermost layer – Interlocking fabric like a jersey, using the plain side face out with the mesh side face in.
  • Needle and thread

Conclusion #

We are stronger together. As we have learned in previous global events, we need each other. Now is not the time for isolation even though we are self-quarantined under a government lockdown. By caring for others, we find a little something to be grateful. This is the key to maintaining our sanity. Our parents and grandparents hailed a call-to-war.

Our call-to-action in this time is to maintain the peace - inside and out and to remain vigilant of hygienic behavior to protect ourselves and others while healthcare workers care for our most vulnerable. This is one way to support your community.

For spiritual and emotional connection, join in a round of clapping on your balcony or looking out your windows at 8 p.m. nightly for healthcare workers.
