How to Book Affordable Flights

Wherever you are in the world, our tips will help you get the best possible price next time you go online to book your flight to or from Mallorca.

1. Search for Flights in Secret (Shhhhhh!!) #

Have you ever found flight prices going up after a few searches? This is because of the cookies in your browser: flight prices do increase when a particular route is repeatedly searched, as the site wants to scare you into booking the flight quickly before prices might get even higher. Always search for flights in incognito or private browsing mode to see the lowest prices.

In Google Chrome or Safari, incognito is enabled by hitting "Command" (Mac) or “Control” (PC), Shift, and “N”. For Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer, hit Command/Control, Shift, and “P”. This will open a the new browser window where your search information is not tracked, thus not inflating prices as you search.

Note: If you're using an older version of OS X, open Safari then click “Safari” in the menu bar and select “Private Browsing”.

Your cookies are reset each time you re-open an incognito window. So if you want to start with a clean slate for each flight search (so your previous searches aren't “remembered”, potentially inflating costs), close all your incognito windows, open a new one and then perform your flight search.

2. Use a flights search engine #

3. Chose the most affordable day to fly out #

Now the word on the street is that Tuesdays is the cheapest day to fly, but the truth is that flight prices are mostly dependent on supply and demand rather than a particular day of the week. It is true, however, that weekends are generally more expensive because people prefer travelling at the end of their working week to start their holidays. Your best strategy is to get take quick look at prices for a whole month to see what days are cheapest for your specific route.

Here's how to proceed:

Step 1
Visit the sky scanner website or download the app.

Step 2
Select One-way (even if flying return – this is just to find out which day is cheapest to start your trip)

Step 3
On a computer: click “Depart” but instead of entering a date, select Whole Month, and then Cheapest Month so you can browse all dates to see which one is cheapest. Hit Search flights for an easy overview of cheapest days.

In the mobile app: Tap the departure date then change the view to “Chart”. You can easily swipe left and right to find the cheapest date, and tap on one of the bars to see the price.

Repeat these steps for your return flight, if applicable. You can still book a return ticket in one booking, but going through these steps first will show you which dates are generally cheaper to fly in/out on for your round trip.

Kiwi.com and Google Flights work similarly to Skyscanner, plus they have map views as well, so you can see where the airport is. For tracking when and where it is cheapest to fly, Hopper also offer price analysis and track fluctuations (i.e. when it is best to fly).

4. Find the cheapest Airport to fly from #

Do not limit yourself by booking flights to expensive airports, only. Google nearest airports to find alternative locations to fly from. Airlines like Ryanair prefer smaller, less popular airports like London Stansted because of lower fees. Often they even get to use those airstrips for free because a large amount of passengers passing through an airport equals x amount of revenue for the airport. So, it can be worth the effort of taking a short trip out of major cities. If you can’t find a cheap flight from your nearest airport, try googling nearby airports or use Travelmath to get a list of nearby spots to jet away from.

5. Learn to LOVE Budget Airlines. #

Sure, complimentary drinks and recliner seats are great, but do those few extra comforts really justify a hefty extra charge on a short distance flight? Most travelers to Mallorca won't take flights much longer than 2 hours. That cup of mediocre tea or coffee plus that soggy sandwich included in a full-fare might easily cost you a few hundred euros in higher fares. Okay, Budget Airlines aren’t exactly known for their first-class service, but who cares when you know that shortly you'll be sitting on one of those beautiful bar or restaurant terraces where you can have all the drinks in the world and fabulous sandwiches – the famous bocadillos - at a much more affordable price.

6. If you know when and where you're going, don't wait to book #

Finally, if you have decided that you want to go to Mallorca do not hesitate to book right away! Don't stand around waiting for the grass to grow for the closer you get to your date of departure, the more you will probably pay. Flights to Mallorca in high season rarely get any cheaper. Most Airlines have been flying here for many years and know exactly how many tickets they can sell. So, they plan well ahead, and offer just the right amount of flights. And the scarcer seats get, the more expensively they sell. Vueling & Easyjet are among the cheapest to fly from the uk to Mallorca.
