Can Picafort

2 June 2023

Can Picafort has been appealing to holiday makers, in particular German tourists, for many years. In fact, this resort - just along the coast from the stunning bay of Alcudia - is so well equipped for the holiday season, it’s hard to imagine it was once a small fishing village, with evidence of settlements from as early as the Bronze Age.

Getting There #

Located around an hour from Palma, and easily accessible via car and public transport, Can Picafort makes for the perfect getaway (coastal yet commutable). The Bus 390 goes from Plaça España (Palma City Center) down from the Intermodal Station a few times a day. The A32 bus runs directly from Palma airport throughout the entire year with a very regular schedule during the summer months, and a reduced timetable during the winter. Alternatively, car hire is available at very affordable rates and will take your journey time from 2 hours on the bus to just an hour by car.

History #

The history of Can Picafort dates back to well over a century ago, when the wealthy families in Santa Margalida chose to build their holiday homes across the idyllic coastline. What in the 1970’s was a little fishing village and home to just 200 inhabitants; now is a thriving international holiday hot spot. In this short space of time almost 100,000 hotel beds have arrived in the resort! Despite being one of the less mountainous areas of the north of the island, Can Picafort is characterised by its flat terrain and the sheer number of pine trees that surround it.

Local Sights #

In the Son Baulo area of the resort you find ‘Son Real’, a small protected area where much of the local wildlife chooses to make their home. Animals such as turtles, dormice, red pheasants, hares, rabbits and weasels can all be found within this area! There is also an array of archaeological excavations taking place in the area- dating back to the Roman era or even before.

Public Art in Can Picafort is famous with installations and paintings by international artists. For this alone, taking a trip to the center of Can Picafort is worth the effort. Take a look at the photos by Gabriela Ursache, an Affordable Mallorca reader who graciously sent us a set of photos from her recent trip with her son.. Gabriela sent a note recently, "The beach is much more beautiful than in these pictures. It has a huge part with white sand and the bar with the pool is open and running. Very nice."

Food and Drink #

You are certainly spoilt for choice with eateries here in Can Picafort, which can make decision making tough.

Mar y Paz
This oceanside bar and restaurant complete with its own open air pool (filled directly from the sea!) has a fabulous charm and appeal. The chic furnishings and ‘Ibiza pool bar’ vibe instantly grab your eye, and the pool is a HUGE added bonus. Drinks and food are affordably priced, and the menu caters for vegetarians, vegans and those with food intolerances; offering good sized portions and very tasty meals. For those who love cocktails, there is an extensive cocktail menu on offer, with various new creations available each day. Anyone who purchases a drink is welcome to use the pool and loungers for the duration of the day; but do be prepared that on busy family days (Sunday’s are always popular with the locals!) you may need to reserve a table for dinner or reserve a sunbed.

La Pinta
Spain means tapas; and La Pinta really serves up some MEAN tapas! An extensive menu of classic dishes, and dishes with a modern ‘fusion-style’ twist are available to share and sample together- meaning you can have a little bit of everything (perfect for families and friends!). If tapas don’t take your fancy then there is also a comprehensive main menu, which mainly consists of Asian inspired dishes, sure to tantalise your taste buds. Having moved into new, larger, premises last year the authentic decor and cool ambience is sure to have you falling in love with La Pinta!

Sports and Recreation #

In terms of sporting activities, Can Picafort’s coastline is increasingly popular with lovers of paddleboarding and kayaking. Seaview Kayaks located in the resort offers a range of excursions and packages for all ages and abilities, and can be found on Facebook or via their website.

If you don’t love water sports (like myself) then head over to Son Serra de Marina and walk across the headlands, or maybe even venture into Alcudia and stroll leisurely for the 2 hour beachfront walk, there’s also the S’Albufera nature reserve where several rare species of bird can be found.

Fiestas and Annual Highlights #

Take note that due to COVID-19 some events may be cancelled or take place in a different way from past years. No matter what, please, stay safe, wear a mask and keep your distance! For more information about upcoming events in Can Picafort, check out the town's website http://canpicafort.es/en/events/.

As with most resorts in Mallorca, Can Picafort is not exempt from holding a fabulous fiesta (or two). The main highlight on the fiesta calendar is ‘Canpicafornia’ in August, a fiesta which comprises of a 1960’s ‘Woodstock’ themed party known as ‘Flower Power’. The streets are transformed into a paradise of hippy memorabilia and the best of the 1960’s tunes. Throughout the week there is an array of activities including a colour fest and a duck chasing competition...Mad as it sounds hundreds jump into the sea to collect rubber ducks and the ones that are ‘marked’ mean you win a prize. It’s great fun! Watch this video and see for yourself:

The Saladina Art Fest in October is another highlight that has, over the years, left many traces throughout town with spectacular street art being painted on walls and facades by international artists as well as members of the local art scene, turning Can Picafort into an open air museum for urban art. Of course, the festival is much more than the traces it leaves. Watch this video which was done at the festival in 2017.

Living in Can Picafort #

Purchasing property in Can Picafort has a starting price of around 185,000€ (based on a 3-bedroomed apartment) but prices can reach up to the region of 450,000€ depending on the facilities within the property.

Rental prices range between 600-1500€ per month (based on a 3-bedroomed apartment) and although some are available all year round, many are only available for seasonal lets (May-October). Can Picafort does resemble a ‘ghost town’ outside of the summer season, and although there are schools, supermarkets and amenities they are limited. The larger neighbouring resort of Alcudia is better suited to those looking to live permanently in the north of the island.
