Cala Ratjada

25 June 2019

A thriving holiday resort, situated on the spectacular Northeast coast of Mallorca.

Previously a fishing port, many moons ago, the charming coves and sandy beaches are sure to entice any holiday maker. A promenade dotted with quaint little bars and restaurants, and a thriving little port, Cala Ratjada is certainly easy on the eye. In actual fact, this little town is the closest point on the island of Mallorca to the neighbouring island of Menorca, and on a clear day it is possible to see the old capital of Ciutadella. Particularly popular with German tourists, Cala Ratjada goes into hibernation over the winter months, except for a handful of locals and their favourite bars. That being said, it certainly makes up for it’s quiet winter. by being a hive of activity during the summer months.

Getting There #

Around and hour and a half’s drive from Palma de Mallorca Airport, there is sadly no direct bus transfer in place to bring holiday makers into Cala Ratjada. However, there are always alternatives such as car hire, taxi or private transfer, and of course using public transport: Although there is no direct bus line from the airport, you could simply jump on a bus from the airport to Palma centre and then catch the 411 TIB bus service, into the resort.

Affordable Mallorca Tip: Some of these bus routes terminate in San Llorenc, so you're better to be sure of the timetable beforehand. Although this mode of transport would add an hour to your journey time, it’s a great way to see the island and will only cost 11.25€.

Historic Sights #

Thanks to its close proximity to Menorca, Cala Ratjada played a vitally important role in the island’s history. As one of the most active fishing ports on the island supplying expensive seafood such as lobster, the town has been making a name for itself since the 17th century, and is still as lively as ever. Simply head down to the harbour to witness the fishermen in action!

Sa Torre Cega

This spectacular manor house, located high on the hill and overlooking the harbour, was opened to the public by the March family (a famous banking family here on the island of Mallorca). Only available to view with a private tour guide (unless a public event is being held), the house also consists of beautiful botanical gardens, showcasing some of the finest flowers and plants around.

The house is open all year, although times differ slightly depending on the season. Entry is just 4€ for children and adults over the age of 12, and 3.80€ for pensioners and anyone under the age of 12. Tours must be booked in advance through the tourist office or the Fundación March.

Address: Sa Torre Cega, c/ Juan March, 2, 07590 Capdepera

Punta de Capdepera Lighthouse

For those of you who fancy a little stretch of your legs, then the hike up to the Punta de Capdepera lighthouse is well worth a try. A gentle stroll, with a comfortable incline, you will be rewarded with incredible views across to the island of Menorca (weather permitting) and get a chance to see this amazing feat of 19th century architecture is still standing strong today.

Market #

Saturday- 9 a.m. -1 p.m.

The weekly market held at Plaça del Pins comprises various local products including food and handicrafts as well as the usual clothing and accessory stalls. Well attended by tourists and locals alike, many people come from the surrounding resorts of Cala Bona, Cala Millor and Sa Coma to sample this lively market.

Tours and Excursions #

Boat trips are the name of the game when it comes to tours and excursions here in Cala Ratjada. Several boats frequent the pretty port on a daily basis, including the Moonfish and Sea Explorer- both of which are glass bottomed boats venturing across the entirety of the Northeast coast of the island and incorporating swim stops and the opportunity to hop on and off at different ports along the way! Tickets are within the region of 20€ per person, but depending on the hotel you may be staying in, there may be deals to be had.

Thrill seekers and lovers of the ocean waves will enjoy an excursion on the Cala Ratjada Express, a speedboat connecting all of the pretty coastal towns, at a rate of knots (quite literally)! Similarly priced to the glass bottom boats, but offering a completely different experience- it’s well worth a try.

Fiestas and Events #

Tourist Week

Many of the resorts across the Northeast coast celebrate tourist week. A week long fiesta during the final week of September, where food, fireworks, music and dancing take over the streets! Everything is completely free to attend, and the atmosphere is electric. From Cala Ratjada to Cala Bona, there is a party in every cala, every day!

Mostra de la Llampuga

Also in September, this fiesta celebrates the locally caught fish, the llampuga("lightning fish"), which every restaurant incorporates into their menus during this celebration held during the last weekend of September. It is a brilliant chance to sample local cuisine, and capture a taste of the authentic Mallorca.

Pasta Pasta

Can you go wrong with pizza and pasta? Quite simply, the answer is no! We’ve all been there on a family holiday where nobody can find quite what they fancy- but here at Pasta Pasta that won’t be an issue. Overlooking the turquoise waters of the bay, with a stylish and sophisticated setting- prices are in the affordable region of 10-15€ per dish. As well as the extensive range of pizza and pasta, there are meat and fish options, and also vegan, vegetarian and children’s meals, too! My top tip would be to orderBy the ‘pan de pizza’ as a starter- it’s an absolute delight! Service is attentive and pleasant; the multicultural atmosphere is simply wonderful- it’s certainly one to sample on your visit to Cala Ratjada.

Affordable Mallorca Tip: Booking highly recommended for this restaurant, it’s very popular with locals!

Los Arcos

When it comes to sampling local cuisine, Los Arcos is hard to beat. They serve an array of tapas and paella dishes, as well as locally sourced meats and fish. Although not offering sea views, this little restaurant is incredibly popular with local residents (always a sign that the food is good!) and it also means that prices are that little bit more affordable. A main course, class of wine, water and coffee will cost in the region of 25€ per person, add a starter or dessert and you’re looking at around 30€. Howeve,r for a real, authentic Mallorquin experience- this is great food at a great price!

Sports #

Cycling and hiking within Cala Ratjada, and the surrounding areas, is incredibly popular with tourists from across the globe! The Serra de Llevant mountain range is located on your doorstep with a selection of hiking and cycling routes to take advantage off. With no mountain peaks higher than 500m, these walks are challenging without being too difficult, but for those who want to push themselves that little further, the Serra de Tramuntana is within easy reach as well!

Affordable Mallorca Tip: For a leisurely ride or walk, try the bay of Cala Mesquida. Its stunning views across the rocky coastline are breathtaking.

Living in Cala Ratjada #

Due to the limited facilities during the winter months, Cala Ratjada is one of the more affordable areas to purchase property on the island. However, do consider that during the winter months you will need to be willing, and able, to travel into neighbouring towns of Arta and Manacor to fulfil daily tasks such as food shopping!

On average, renting is slightly higher in Cala Ratjada as many properties are for tourist use in the summer months, and therefore landlords charge within the regions of 1,000-1,200€ per month (based on 2-3 bedroomed apartments), whereas purchase prices for a property of the same size are around 165,000-200,000€, which is relatively affordable in comparison to other areas across the Northeast coast.
