Cala Millor

26 March 2019

Located on the north east coast of the island, Cala Millor offers an expanse of golden sands and tranquil waters which lie adjacent to a promenade that displays an array of bars, restaurants and shops. This resort has a reputation for being most popular with German tourists, unlike its neighbouring resort of Cala Bona, that is mainly popular with British holidaymakers. Although a hive of activity during the summer months, Cala Millor resembles a ghost town during the winter! Just three hotels stay open all year round, and many apartments are used as holiday lets, so be prepared for a quiet few weeks if you choose to stay between November and February.

Getting there #

Around an hour and a half’s drive from Palma de Mallorca airport, the route is relatively straight forward. Heading onto the motorway towards Manacor, before taking the country roads towards the municipality of Son Servera.

For non-drivers, local transport links to the resort are fantastic during the summer months! The A42 bus will take you directly from the airport to the city centre, and only costs 8€ per person. Although this service still operates in the winter it does only offer one bus per day. There are alternative options such as taxis and private transfers or shared transfers, and these can cost between 14€ per person and 100 €.

History & Local Sights #

Situated within the municipality of San Llorenc des Cardassar, Cala Millor began to develop during the 1950’s, and has since planted itself on the map as a well-established tourist resort. With the name translating as ‘Better Bay’ it is the gateway to many historic and rural beauty spots across the coastline. With over 5,000 permanent residents, Cala Millor is the largest resort on the north east coast of the island.

Markets #

Monday 9.30 am -1 pm

During the summer months Cala Millor hosts a large market, offering a variety of stalls with a combination of local handicrafts and produce for sale. As well as many traditional stalls, the market also provides more commercialised items such as toys and games- so the children will certainly want to visit!

Tours & Excursions #

Cala Millor is a resort designed for tourists, and sometimes this might give people preconceived ideas about the fact that it lacks in beauty. In fact, it is home to a spectacular castle!

Castell de Punt D’Amer

The Castell de Punt D’Amer sits at the top of a hill, overlooking the bay below, and across to the neighbouring resorts of Sa Coma and S’Illot. The ramble to the top takes around an hour (or a little longer in the heat!) and along the way you will see wild horses roaming the fields, as well as a large cat colony; who happily bask in the sunshine and sandy dunes. The greenery around the castle, also makes it a haven for wildlife such as birds and minibeasts that are native to Mallorca. If all the trekking has got you working up a thirst, then you can relax at the castle’s very own bar! The views always seem that little bit better with a nice cold drink in hand!

Boat Trips (Cala Ratjada, Porto Cristo, Cala Romantica, Cala Morlanda)

From the port in Cala Millor, there are regular boat trips that take you across the spectacular north east coastline. The most popular ones are to the nearby towns of Cala Ratjada and Porto Cristo, with swim stops in tiny calas such as Cala Romantica and Cala Morlanda. The majority of these trips take up to three hours, and offer customers the chance to jump into the clear waters or explore the coastal caves! Many of these tours also offer a glass bottom experience, so you can head below and explore the incredible marine life that Mallorca has to offer! Prices vary depending on the time of year, and there are also many holiday operators that can negotiate deals- so the best bet is to check with your travel operator first, and if you’re not satisfied with their cost head down to the main booking offices and go direct! It’s a great family day out for all!

Fiestas & Events #

Fishermen’s Festival (Cala Bona)

On the 16th of July the neighbouring fishing village of Cala Bona celebrates its annual Fishermen’s Festival. This beautiful procession that takes place in the harbour, commemorates the patron saint of seafarers and fishermen, and involves the ‘blessing of the boats’ - a ceremony whereby a priest prays for the safety of the boats and their sailors when out at sea. Much like any Mallorquin fiesta, the celebrations are topped off with live music, food, dancing and fireworks! It really is a phenomenal weekend!

Tourist Week (Last Week of September)

Every year the local town councils of Son Servera and San Llorenc, as well as the hotel association of Cala Millor, organise a tourist week! This fun filled week offers sports competitions, dance contests, live music and of course local wines and cuisine at almost every hotel and /or bar between Cala Bona, Cala Millor and Sa Coma! The week is topped off with a gala dinner (at most hotels) as well as a brilliant concert and firework display at the Castell de Punt D’Amer.

Food & Drink #

The streets of Cala Millor are lined with many bars and restaurants, and it can be difficult to choose when there is simply so much choice!

Sa Caleta (tapas and traditional)

Located along the sea front in Cala Millor this traditional restaurant serves some of the finest tapas dishes in the area! Famed for its local cuisine, Sa Caleta also offers a varied main menu, incorporating fresh fish and meat dishes, sourced from the local area. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sa Caleta will cure your hunger pangs at any time of the day! In fact, if you enjoy their tasty treats you can purchase items such as sobrasada and local serrano ham, to take away with you; as Sa Caleta also operates its own deli!

Booking is advised in the evenings, and during the summer months- you won’t be disappointed!

Sports #

The coastal location of Cala Millor means that it is a haven for water sports! Offering everything from Jet Ski hire, to paddle board classes and paragliding, water babies and adrenaline junkies will be in their element! As with all activities like this, prices vary depending on provider and time of year, so it is worth checking with individual companies down on the beachfront.

For those who prefer their feet on dry land (myself included) Segway tours are operated along the beachfront. The flat promenade stretches all the way into Cala Bona, so you can admire the views and turn a twenty minute walk into a five minute cruise on the Segway! Although great fun, it’s not as easy as it looks!

Living in Cala Millor #

Rental prices in Cala Millor are not the cheapest in the north east, however with such close proximity to the waterfront, you are often paying for this luxury! Properties vary between 600-2,500€ per month (based on 2-3 bedroom properties on a 12-month lease) which is a rather large difference! It can be tricky to find long term rental properties here, due to the large amount of properties that are rented solely for tourist use; so it may be better to look at the more residential areas of Son Servera, and Capdepera.

Buying in the area will guarantee you more for your money, as property prices start as low as 160,000€ and reach up towards 300,000€ (based on 3 bed properties with shared or private land). The area offers a primary and secondary school, many supermarkets, doctors surgery and a variety of places to eat and drink- making it the perfect place to set up a long term family home, or a holiday retreat!
