Cala Formentor

1 June 2023

Cala Formentor, located, as the name suggests, on the Formentor Peninsula in Mallorca’s northeast is one of the most beautiful natural beaches of Mallorca. Escape the summer heat in the sheltering arms of pine and holm oak forests and untamed vegetation. Also known as Cala Pi de la Posada, this is one of the longest and narrowest public beaches: one kilometre long and twelve metres wide of finest, whitest sand. Its waters are calm and clear. The beach never loses its lush green appeal throughout the baking summer heat and the ideal place to relax and wind down.

Access and Amenities #

Formentor beach is about 6 kilometres from Puerto Pollença and easily accessible by car or public transport. For a breath-taking view, it’s worth stopping at the carpark and Mirador a few kilometres before you reach the beach.

Especially in the months of July and August the beach is very popular, so make sure you arrive before 10 or 11 am for the latest to avoid getting caught in traffic and find parking. Although there is a big shady public car park, many try to find parking along the street to avoid the hefty parking fee (7 to 10 € at the time of writing)

This cala offers all the amenities you may need including toilets, water stations for drinking, access for those physically-challenged including all terrain wheelchairs and wooden walkways, tourist information points, cafes and shops. Rent paddle boats on the beach here at €15 an hour. The beach is safe for children. Lifeguards are on duty 10.30am until 6.30pm in high season, and 11am until 5pm in mid-season. The beach is not patrolled in low season, which is mid-October to mid-May.

Check Prices #

Cala Formentor has always been a somewhat elitist stretch of sand. It is well-known for 5-star Hotel Formentor and its Blue-Flag beach, Cala Gentil. Given the local amenities and luxury hotels, the area offers a range of prices for sun beds: two beds and a parasol in Zona L’Espiga are €13.50/day, with Zona La Veranda charging €21/day and Zona Platjamar asking €50.00. Pay attention to the zone signs to be clear on day costs, before you settle in for a nap or a read. Please, also note, that all prices were checked at time of writing and might have changed by the time you get there, i.e. take them with a grain of salt and ask to be on the safe side.

By Boat #

Water and underwater conditions are ideal for anchoring, with sandy grounds at a depth of five metres at 300 metres and three metres at 200 metres out in the bay. Be extremely careful in case of south-easterly and south-westerly winds though as your boat might be pushed onshore. It is also not recommended to go through the channel between the coast and Formentor island as the depth there doesn’t reach more than one metre. The next port is Puerto Pollença 3.5 sea miles away.
